Publishing with FTP
"FTP" is short for File Transfer
Protocol, and it is a common way to transfer files between
computers. In this case we need to "upload" or publish the web pages (files) from
your computer to
the web server.
Required software
In order to use FTP, you must have a FTP client program installed on your PC
- in other words, you need software on your PC in order to talk to the FTP
server.
If you are using Internet Explorer version 5 or later, you already have a FTP
software: it is built right into the browser. To publish with Internet
Explorer, do the following:
In the Address bar, type ftp://<user
id>:<password>@ftp.cozahost.com/<yourdirectory >, and replace
all the words in <> with the information supplied to you by Cozahost.
Example:
For example, if your user id is user and your password is
pwd and your directory is website, the
address would be:
ftp://user:pwd@ftp.cozahost.com/website (Don't
click on this link - it's only an example)
Of course you must be online (connected to the internet) when you
do this!
After a short wait you will see a list of files in your browser - this is
your web site. To upload a file, simply select one from a folder on your
PC and drop it in the browser.
To download, rename or delete a file on the server: right click on the file name (in your
browser) and select the required function from the menu.
More advanced:
Publishing like this with Internet Explorer can be
cumbersome when you repeatedly publish groups of files, and we suggest that you
download a specialised FTP client program if you intend to use FTP regularly.
Another (better) alternative is of course to use the Microsoft Frontpage
publishing feature.
